Project 1: Handmade Sketchbooks
All the students in the fifth through eighth grade created a sketchbook in the beginning weeks of school. Students were taught a Japanese-style book binding technique that used tissue paper to help bind the papers together. Students used authentic tools such as the awl and then used materials from the drawing, collage and painting center to design their front covers.

Project 3: Self-Portraits
Continuing with the theme of identity from the first quarter, students looked to artist Chuck Close and his method of creating realistic portraits using the grid. Students studied value and contrast and learned about the differences between low and high values using art pencils. They then created a self-portrait using Chuck Close's method of grid drawing to create a wide range of value.
