Handmade Sketchbooks
All the students in the fifth through eighth grade created a sketchbook in the beginning weeks of school. Students were taught a Japanese-style book binding technique that used tissue paper to help bind the papers together. Students used authentic tools such as the awl and then used materials from the drawing, collage and painting center to design their front covers.

Self-portraits in the style of Modigliani
Students used their understanding of the formal elements of line and shape to study the work of artist Amedeo Modligiani who looked to traditional African Art as inspiration for his own work. Students learned about Amedeo Modigliani's career as a sculptor and painter and how he chose to construct his portraits. Students created a self-portrait in the style of Modigliani, using chalks pastels on black paper.

Radial Name Designs
Students created their own radial name designs using a transfer technique. They first learned about radial balance and the significance it has in various cultures throughout time. In the process of creating their designs, students applied primary and secondary colors to the letters and the background.
